French beans patolli

Patolli is a traditional south Indian dish made with a combination of lentils and vegetables such as okra, cluster beans, cabbage, raw banana or French beans. It is very tasty and healthy. In today's recipe, I have made a French beans patolli.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup chopped French beans
  • 1 cup lentils / Bengal gram dal soaked in water for 2 hrs
  • 1 big onion chopped
  • 2 green chillies slit and cut
  • 1 spring curry leaves
  • 2 Tbsp oil
  • 2 whole dry red chillies
  • 1 ” piece ginger
  • Pinch of turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp black lentils
  • Pinch of asafetida
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • Salt to taste

Method
 

  1. Grind the soaked lentils with ginger, dry red chillies, cumin seeds into a coarse paste by adding little water and salt to taste.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
  3. Now add black lentils, asafetida and curry leaves and fry for few seconds.
  4. Add green chillies, onion and fry till translucent.
  5. Now add the ground paste and mix well. Cook stirring once in a while for 12-15 minutes.
  6. The patoli should have dry sauté look like stir fry. This goes very well with steamed rice.
