Instant Idli (Steamed dumplings)

This recipe for instant idli doesn't need any fermentation and is very easy and quick to prepare. It is healthy and tastes delicious too.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 Cup Semolina Preferably coarse
  • 1 Green chilli chopped
  • 1 " Ginger Finely chopped
  • ½ Onion chopped
  • ½ tsp Mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp Bengal gram Split and skinned also called Chana dal
  • ½ tsp Split black gram
  • Salt as required
  • 1 Cup Plain yogurt beaten
  • Small bunch of coriander chopped
  • 1 tsp Oil

Method
 

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, split black gram and Bengal gram to it. Let them splutter.
  2. Add the ginger, green chilli and onion and fry for a minute.
  3. Add the semolina and fry until brown taking care not to burn it. Keep aside and cool it.
  4. After the semolina mixture is cooled down, add the plain yogurt and make to a thick batter.
  5. Scoop the batter into an idli tray and steam it for 10 minutes.
  6. After switching off the flame, let it sit for 5 min and serve hot.
