Mulled cider

If you’re bored with mulled wine (or don’t like it) why don’t you try mulled cider instead! This is a French version, so it’s made with Calvados - but it’s nice with rum too.  Sometimes I make it with star anise & cloves instead of allspice. It’s the perfect warming drink at parties during the winter festivities, particularly on Bonfire Night and Halloween.

Ingredients

  • 2 cinnamon sticks broken into pieces
  • 1 Tbsp allspice
  • 4 cups of apple cider
  • 60 ml Calvados
  • To serve: cinnamon sticks

Method

  1. Combine the allspice and cinnamon sticks in a muslin bag.
  2. Pour the cider into a heavy-based saucepan, put the muslin bag in it. If you have time, and heat it up very slowly. Don't boil it! If you have time, let it rest and infuse then reheat.
  3. When the cider is warm, pour 10 ml Calvados into 6 glasses and ladle the cider over it. Garnish with cinnamon sticks and serve.
