Punugulu

Punugulu or punukkulu is an Andhra snack and common street food. It is a deep fried snack made with rice, black gram dal and other spices. They are often served with peanut or coconut chutney.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup black gram dal
  • ½ cup raw rice
  • 1 medium sized onion finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • ¼ cup chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 tsp chopped ginger
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep frying

Method
 

  1. Soak black gram dal and rice for 4 hours. Rinse thoroughly and keep aside.
  2. Grind them by adding little water to get thick and soft consistency.
  3. Add chopped onion, green chilies and coriander leaves. Add salt and mix well.
  4. Heat oil for deep frying on low flame.
  5. Take a small portion of the batter, make round shape balls and drop into oil carefully.
  6. Turn the flame to medium high and cook till they turn into golden brown color.
  7. Repeat the process until the batter is done.
  8. Serve hot with peanut or coconut chutney.
