Simple Dal

This simple dal is made in a pressure cooker so it's quick & easy and tasty too! It has a very mild taste to it and goes very well with steamed rice or roti.

Ingredients
  

  • ¾ cup Toor dal washed (Pigeon peas)
  • ¼ cup Chana dal washed (Bengal gram dal)
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 Onion chopped
  • 1 Tomato chopped
  • 2 Cloves garlic finely chopped
  • ½ tsp Mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 Dry red chilli
  • Salt as required
  • 1 tsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Turmeric

Method
 

  1. Pressure cook both the washed dals together with 2 cups of water according to your pressure cooker specifications.
  2. In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, garlic and red chilli. Let them splutter. Add the onion and fry until brown.
  3. Add the tomato and fry until soft. Add this to the pressure cooked dals.
  4. On medium flame, let the dals boil along with turmeric and salt.
  5. If the consistency is very thick, add ¼th cup water to loosen the dals.
  6. Serve hot with rice or roti.
