Perfect Cafetiere Coffee
Background
Some of you may think how to make perfect Cafetiere coffee is obvious. It’s like writing about how to cook the perfect boiled egg! Actually there is a very good post about that very subject on CookTogether which you can find here.
The picture shows the sort of cafetiere I’m talking about. As you can see, it’s the most basic, cheap & cheerful 1 litre (2 pint) glass type - but the method I use works for any cafetiere with a plunger - just adjust the amount of coffee according to size.
I used to find that when I went to push down the plunger coffee would squirt out by the spout - which was a waste and made a mess. On top of that it's often really hard to get the plunger down to the bottom - unless you're a gorilla! This method prevents both problems.
Ingredients
- 6 Tbsp coffee beans
Instructions
- Put a little more than a litre of water in a kettle (or in a pan) on to boil.
- Grind the beans in a coffee grinder
- Put the ground coffee into the cafetiere
- Leave the water for 30 seconds after it has boiled then pour half of it into the cafetiere
- Leave for 3 minutes - covered with a tea-cosy (see tips)
- Bring the rest of the water to the boil. Again wait 30 seconds before gently pouring over the coffee surface in a zig-zag motion - this helps settle the coffee grounds downwards. Stop about 1 cm from the top of the cafetiere.
- Leave for another 3 minutes - keeping warm as before.
- Insert the plunger then push down gently and smoothly.
- Enjoy!
Tips
- If you don't have a grinder, use 7-8 Tbsp of ready ground coffee.
- If you don't have tea-cosy just use a tea-towel until you buy one - they're essential for making proper tea, about which more later!
