Preheat the oven to 190°C.
Mix the flour with the baking soda, then crumble in the butter. Work it with your fingers until you get a mixture resembling breadcrumbs. Add the sugar, syrup, orange peel and egg. Mix until you get a firm dough. Chill for a while in the fridge, if time allows.
Roll out the dough on a lightly-floured surface to about 5mm thick and stamp out Christmassy shapes.
Put them on lined or non-stick baking sheet then bake for 10 to 15 minutes until lightly golden.
Cool them on a wire rack then decorate to your liking - dip them in melted chocolate or icing; draw on them with icing pen; or just dust with icing sugar or edible glitter.
