Ingredients

  • 350 g flour
  • 1-2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 100 g butter or margarine
  • 150 g soft brown sugar
  • 1 egg lightly beaten
  • 2 Tbsp golden syrup or honey
  • 1 orange zested

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C.
  2. Mix the flour with the baking soda, then crumble in the butter. Work it with your fingers until you get a mixture resembling breadcrumbs. Add the sugar, syrup, orange peel and egg. Mix until you get a firm dough. Chill for a while in the fridge, if time allows.
  3. Roll out the dough on a lightly-floured surface to about 5mm thick and stamp out Christmassy shapes.
  4. Put them on lined or non-stick baking sheet then bake for 10 to 15 minutes until lightly golden.
  5. Cool them on a wire rack then decorate to your liking – dip them in melted chocolate or icing; draw on them with icing pen; or just dust with icing sugar or edible glitter.
