Beaten rice, potato and peas

Beaten rice (also known as flattened rice flakes) along with potato and peas is calledpoha upma(poha means beaten rice). It is a famous and common breakfast in every household in the north of India.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups Beaten rice
  • 1 Small potato cubed
  • ¼ cup Peas
  • 1 Onion chopped
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 sprig of curry leaves
  • 1 sprig of coriander leaves
  • 1 Green chilli chopped
  • Salt as required
  • 1 Tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Turmeric

Method
 

  1. Wash the beaten rice in a sieve under water thoroughly.
  2. In a flat dish, soak the washed beaten rice in 160 ml water until the rice absorbs all the water.
  3. Add turmeric and salt to the soaked beaten rice.
  4. In a pan, heat the oil and add mustard seeds, green chilli and curry leaves and let them splutter.
  5. Add the diced potato and add ¼ cup water, then cook under a lid, stirring intermittently.
  6. When the potato is cooked, add peas and cook for couple of minutes.
  7. Add the beaten rice and coriander, mix well.
  8. Serve immediately.
