Cinnamon broomsticks
Background
For our yearly Halloween party I always try out a few new, simple recipes that don’t require much time or many ingredients. I saw these cinnamon broomsticks on TikTok and thought I’ll make them this year. The video of the recipe was a bit misleading - if you bake the pretzel sticks with the pastry they will burn! So follow my recipe instead! These cinnamon broomsticks are vegan too and you can use gluten-free pastry if needed.
Ingredients
- 1 sheet ready rolled puff pastry, vegan or gluten-free, if needed
- 2 Tbsp soft margarine or dairy-free spread
- 4 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon powder
- Salted pretzel sticks
- Cinnamon sugar, to serve
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, mix the sugar, cinnamon and margarine until you get a paste.
- Roll out the pastry, then cut out about 8 squares.
- Spread the cinnamon paste on half of each, then fold the other half (which has no paste on it) on top, pressing them together.
- Make a 1cm rim (guiding line) on the folded edge, using a blunt knife (don’t cut through it!). Using a sharp knife (or pizza cutter), cut lines into pastry, up to the rim.
- Place a pretzel stick to one side of the rim and roll the pastry around the stick, creating a broom shape.
- Put the pastries on the baking sheet, allowing enough space between them to expand.
- Sprinkle some cinnamon sugar on top if liked.( Or you can brush them with a little almond milk, or egg wash for a vegetarian version, if preferred.)
- Take out the pretzel sticks and cut one into small pieces. Put these back into the holes to keep them open during baking.
- Bake for about 12 minutes until golden. Scatter some cinnamon sugar on top, if liked.
- Let them cool, then swap the small pretzel pieces with a long stick, pushing them into the baked pastry to create broomsticks.
