Background
Dal makhani is one of the famous Punjabi recipes. It has a rich, creamy gravy which goes well with rice or naan. It is a main dish in marriage functions and parties.
Ingredients
- ½ cup Whole black gram ( mungo bean)
- 2 Tbsp Red Kidney Beans
- 1" Ginger chopped
- 4-5 Garlic cloves chopped
- 1 tsp chilli powder
- 1 Onion chopped
- 2 Tomatoes chopped
- 2 Green chillies (or according to taste)
- 1 tsp Garam masala powder
- 3 Tbsp Butter
- Salt as required
- 1 Tbsp Oil
- Water as required
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- 1 Tbsp Full cream
Instructions
- Wash both the lentils thoroughly and soak them overnight.
- Drain the water from the lentils and pressure cook them with 4 cups of water until the red kidney beans are cooked.
- In a separate deep bottomed vessel, heat the oil and butter together. Add the cumin seeds to it and let them splutter.
- Add the onion, ginger, garlic and the green chilli to it. Let the onions fry until brown.
- Add the tomatoes and red chilli powder and fry until the tomatoes become soft.
- Add the lentils to this and boil. Add some water if the mixture is too thick.
- Add the garam masala to the gravy.
- Garnish with cream and serve hot with rice or roti or naan.
