Background
Mulled apple cider is a lovely, warming drink during the cold months. However if you can't or don't want to drink alcohol, mulled apple juice it's a very good alternative, particularly if it's freshly made. This recipe has all the ingredients needed for the right flavour - you won't even notice that's it's alcohol-free! Perfect for parties or to boost your immune system during the winter season.
Ingredients
- 4 apples
- 1 tsp grated ginger
- 1 star anise
- 3 cloves
- 1-2 pieces of lemon peel
- 1 shaving of nutmeg
- 1 small stick of cinnamon
Instructions
- Juice the apple and pour it into a heavy-based saucepan. Add all the other ingredients.
- Bring it to the simmer gently. Don't let it boil!
- Put the lid on and rest it for 5 minutes to infuse, then pour it into mugs through a tea-strainer.
Tips
- You can easily turn it into a hot-toddy by adding ½ Tbsp Calvados to it. This is perfect if you have a bad cold!
- You can you shop-bought apple juice, but the freshly pressed version is much healthier!
