Rice rava upma
Background
This is a very simple, wholesome, healthy breakfast recipe which can be made in a jiffy. Made from coarsely ground rice, this recipe can be prepared with vegetables and even chick peas. The traditional breakfast upma is usually prepared from semolina or cream of wheat but then upma is so versatile that it can be prepared with bread, vermicelli, beaten rice flakes and oats as well.
Ingredients
- 2 cups rice rava
- Β½ cup green gram lentils (dehusked)
- 1 finely chopped onion
- 3 green chillies slit and cut
- 1β ginger finely chopped
- 2 Tbsp oil
- 4 cups water
- Salt to taste
- For seasoning:
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 Tbsp black gram dal
- 1 sprig curry leaves
Instructions
- Heat oil in a cooking vessel, add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add the cumin seeds, green gram lentils and curry leaves and sautΓ© till nice aroma emanates.
- Add the sliced onions, green chillies and ginger and sautΓ© for 2 minutes.
- Add salt and water and bring to a boil.
- Now reduce the heat and slowly add the rice rava to the water and mix continuously so that it combines well with the water.
- Cover it with lid and let it cook for 10 minutes.
- Turn off flame and transfer to a serving bowl.
- Serve hot with chutney or pickle.
