Background
Sausage rolls are always popular at parties. You can easily make them into mummies or witch's fingers or these severed fingers in bandages for Halloween. You can use vegan, chicken or pork sausages - I made them with German frankfurters. Dairy-free or gluten-free pastry can be used too.
Ingredients
- 1 pack frankfurters
- 1 pack ready rolled puff pastry
- 1 egg, beaten (optional)
- Ketchup or chilli sauce
- Almond flakes
Instructions
- Heat the oven to 190°C and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Cut the frankfurters in half. Put some ketchup into a small bowl.
- Unroll the pastry onto a large chopping board. Using a pizza wheel, cut 1 cm wide strips.
- Dip the cut end of the frankfurters into the ketchup then wrap them with the strip (like a bandage), up to the half or two-thirds of the sausage. Arrange on prepared baking sheet.
- Using a knife, make a horizontal slits on the unwrapped end of the sausage, to look like a finger. Add a drop of ketchup.
- Brush the pastry with the egg wash, if you like.
- Bake for 10 minutes, or until pastry is light brown. Turn off the oven and take the tray out.
- Using the ketchup, glue the nails on top of the fingers and put the tray back into the oven for 2-5 minutes. The almond nails should become golden brown and look a bit "bloody".
- Serve them warm or at room temperature.
