Spiced apple and date jam
Background
If you’re after a quick and easy chutney or spiced jam to serve with your roasted ham on Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve or at the in-between parties, try this spiced apple and date jam which can be served immediately. It’s also a perfect last-minute Christmas gift, which your friends will be grateful for, as it goes really well with leftover/cold meat and all those festive cheeses! You can add cinnamon or mixed spice to it, if liked.
Ingredients
- 2 large green apples (about 500g)
- 75g dates (pitted)
- 4 whole cloves
- 200 ml apple cider vinegar
- 75g soft, unrefined cane sugar
- Optional extras: ½ tsp ground cinnamon or mixed spice
Instructions
- Peel and chop the apple into 1 cm pieces. Finely chop the dates. Grind the cloves, using a mortar &pestle.
- Put all ingredients into a heavy saucepan, bring to a boil and simmer for 25 minutes or so over low temperature, until you get a sticky, thick jam.
- Let it cool, then spoon it into sterilised jars or a serving dish.
