Spiced beef & bean burger
Background
I love my burger spicy so when I cook homemade burgers I always add some spices to the mince. This spiced beef & bean burger recipe turned out to be a great experiment -Β it has no eggs or breadcrumbs (the beans act as the binding agent) and can be served in a gluten-free bun. I used some matured Cheddar on the top of mine, but served one without cheese to my friend who has dairy allergy. So this recipe is really flexible β and absolutely delicious!
Ingredients
- 1 cup canned black beans, rinsed and drained
- 450g lean minced beef
- 1 small red onion, finely chopped or grated
- 1 garlic, minced
- Β½ tsp chilli powder
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp paprika
- Β½ tsp dried oregano leaves
- Β½ tsp salt
- Β½ tsp ground black pepper
- 4 hamburger buns of your choice
- Lettuce
- Cheese slices (optional)
- For the salsa:
- 2 medium ripe tomatoes or 1 handful of cherry tomatoes
- Β½ red onion, chopped
- 1 handful coriander leaves
- Juice of 1 lime
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- Salt and pepper
- 2 pickled jalapeno peppers from jar
Instructions
- Place the drained beans in a large bowl and mash them slightly with a potato masher.
- Add the beef, onion, garlic and spices, then salt &pepper. Combine well, then shape the mixture into 4 patties. Rest them till you're ready to cook.
- Make the salsa β finely chop the tomatoes, onion, herbs, and jalapeno and put them in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper, add the oil and lime. Set aside.
- Cut the buns in half and toast or grill them. Set aside.
- Heat your grill, BBQ, griddle pan or frying pan.
- Brush the burger patties with oil, then grill, griddle or pan-fry them on both sides to your liking (about 3-5 min on each side)
- Optional: Put some sliced cheese on the top for the last minute, then put a lid or round metallic bowl over the patties to allow the cheese to melt.
- Assemble the burgers: put a piece of lettuce on the bottom half of the bun, add some salsa, then the burger, then a pickled jalapeno and finally top with the other half of the bun. As a low-carb version serve the patties wrapped in a lettuce filled with salsa.
