Background
This steak is based on the Italian dish Carne pizzaiola, in which cheap cuts of beef are cooked slowly with tomatoes, capers and herbs. However this recipe uses sirloin, so there's no need to cook the meat for a long time and the sauce can be made in just five minutes. So this dish is ideal for a midweek supper.
Ingredients
- 1 large sirloin steak (approx 350g)
- 3 Tbsp olive oil
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 400g ripe tomatoes
- 3 sprigs of oregano
- 1 Tbsp capers (salted)
- To serve: rocket leaves, chopped basil
Instructions
- 2 hours before cooking: remove the meat from the refrigerator.
- Chop the tomatoes and the garlic finely.
- Pre-heat a griddle pan.
- Rub the steak with salt and a Tbsp of oil then fry for 3-5 minutes on both sides. Remove to a plate, rest for 5 minutes.
- In the remaining oil soften the garlic, then add the tomatoes, capers & oregano. Season with salt and pepper. Cook it for five minutes or until the tomatoes are soft.
- Transfer the sauce to a serving platter, put the steak on top and scatter over it a few capers, rocket leaves and basil.
- Serve warm.
Tips
You can also add some chopped red pepper (raw or roasted) to the tomatoes.Categories
