Background
Tamarind rice is a very famous South Indian rice dish which is a must in any grand functions like marriage or engagement parties. It has a tangy taste to it and is very delicious.
Ingredients
- 1 cup Rice (cooked)
- 1 Lemon sized tamarind (Soaked in water)
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 2 tsp Black gram (Urad dal)
- 2 tsp Bengal gram (Chana dal)
- 2 Dry red chillies
- A pinch of Asafoetida
- 1" Ginger (finely chopped)
- 2 Green chillies (Slit)
- 1 tsp Turmeric
- 1 Tbsp Oil
- A sprig of curry leaves
- 1 Tbsp Peanuts (Roasted)
- Salt as required
Instructions
- In a pan, heat the oil and add mustard seeds, black gram and Bengal gram dal and let them splutter.
- Add curry leaves, red chillies, asafoetida, green chillies and ginger.
- Squeeze the tamarind juice and add it to the seasoning and boil until it becomes thick.
- Add turmeric and peanuts to it and mix.
- Switch off and mix this mixture to the rice with salt to taste.
Tips
- The rice should be steaming hot when the mixture is mixed to it.
- If the tanginess is not sufficient, boil some more tamarind juice and add to the rice.
- The tamarind mixture with the seasoning should be added to the rice carefully taking care of the amount of tanginess, so that it should not be either more or less.
- If the tamarind mixture is left out, it can be stored in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for a week and can be used to make more tamarind rice.
