Background
Modak is a traditional Maharastrian steamed sweet dish, prepared specially for the festive occasion dedicated to the Hindu god, Lord Ganesha. It is believed that it's one of Lord Ganesha's favourite sweet dishes - and mine too!
Ingredients
- For outer covering:
- 1 cup Rice flour
- 1½ cups Water
- ¼ tsp Ghee or oil
- Salt as required
- For inner filling:
- 1 cup Fresh grated coconut
- ¾ cup Jaggery, powdered
- 3 Cardamoms, powdered
- ½ cup Water
Instructions
- For inner filling:
- Boil water and add jaggery. Keep stirring until all the jaggery is melted.
- Add the grated coconut and cardamom powder and boil until all the water is evaporated .Take care not to burn the mixture. Allow this mixture to cool.
- For outer cover:
- In a pan, boil the water, ghee and salt together. Gradually add the rice flour stirring quickly on low flame.
- Switch off the flame and cover with lid for 5 minutes.
- Knead the dough when hot. If the dough seems hard or dry add 1 tsp warm water and knead again.
- Make small balls from the dough and flatten them.
- Put some inner filling in the centre of the flattened ball and gather the edges onto the top of the filling and remove any excess flour.
- Repeat the process for all the flattened balls.
- Steam these balls in a steamer.
