Breadmaker Apple and cinnamon Hot Cross buns
Background
These Breadmaker Aaple and cinnamon Hot Cross buns are super easy as the machine does most of the work for you. The buns can be dairy free if plant-based alternatives are used instead of butter and milk. Perfect during the Easter weekend, particularly for breakfast and afternoon tea.
Ingredients
- For the dough: ½ tsp Yeast
- 250g strong white flour
- 1 tsp sugar
- 25g butter (can be dairy free)
- ½ tsp salt
- 2tsp cinnamon
- 1 egg
- 100 ml milk (can be dairy free)
- 100g raisins
- 1 apple
- For the crosses: 2 Tbsp flour + 2 Tbsp water
- For glazing: 2 Tbsp sugar + 4 Tbsp milk, plant-based milk or water
Instructions
- Peel and cut the apple into small cubes.
- Attach the kneading blade (if you have one) onto the bread machine spindle then add all the dough ingredients, except the raisins and apple, into the bread pan in the above order.
- Select the appropriate setting as per your machine's instructions. This is normally about 2 - 2½ hours. If it has an auto dispenser, then put the raisins & apple into it, otherwise add them when indicated by the machine.
- When the cycle completes, take out the dough and put it onto a lightly oiled chopping board or work surface.
- If the dough is still too sticky and a little bit more flour and knead gently for a couple of minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Divide the dough into eight equal ball shapes. Put them on a lightly greased baking tray which you should put into a warm place (about 40°C) to allow to prove. It should take about ½ an hour to double in size.
- Meanwhile, make the paste by mixing the flour and water together. Spoon the mixture into a disposable piping bag and snip of the end.
- Pipe a cross on top of each bun.
- Pop the tray of buns into the oven, preheated to 190°C and bake for about 15-20 minutes - until golden brown.
- While the hot cross buns are baking, prepare the glaze, by mixing the ingredients until the sugar has dissolved. Brush the buns generously with the glaze while they're still hot.
- Let them cool, then serve.
