Background
Chilli fritters are one of my favourite snacks and it's a famous street food in the South India. It goes well with tamarind chutney and green chutney. As the name suggests, they have chillies though the fritters are not too spicy. The chillies used in this recipe are very big green chillies often found in any Indian store.
Ingredients
- ¼ tsp Dry mango powder
- ¼ tsp Baking soda
- 1 cup Bengal gram flour
- ½ tsp Cumin seeds
- ½ tsp Garam masala powder
- 8 Large green chillies
- Pinch of asafoetida
- Oil for deep frying
- 1 Onion chopped
- 3 Potatoes (Boiled and mashed)
- ½ tsp Red chilli powder
- ¼ tsp Turmeric
- Salt as required
- Water as required
Instructions
- The potato stuffing is prepared first and set aside.
- For the stuffing, in a pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté for a couple of minutes until the onions are slightly cooked.
- Add asafoetida, salt and turmeric and fry for a minute.
- Add dry mango powder, chilli powder and garam masala.
- Add the mashed potatoes and mix well and let this mixture cool down.
- For the batter, mix bengal gram flour, salt and baking soda in a bowl. Add water little by little until it forms a smooth batter.
- Slit the green chillies and remove the seeds and stuff them with the potato mixture.
- Dip the stuffed chillies in the batter until they are nicely coated.
- Heat oil for deep frying and gently add the batter coated chillies in it and fry them until they brown.
- Remove from heat and serve with tamarind chutney and green chutney.
