Chinese-style baked pork belly slices
Background
These Chinese-style baked pork belly slices make ideal party nibbles all year round, although I like making them during the winter festivities. They can be pre-marinated, even pre-baked, so the only thing needs to be done at a party is the final grilling/barbecuing which should only take 10-15 minutes. Serve them with Hoisin sauce or a sweet & sour chilli dip.
Ingredients
- 500g pork belly slices
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp ground ginger
- 2 tsp five spice mixture
- 2 Tbsp Soy sauce
- 1 lime, juiced
- 1 mandarin, juiced
- 2 Star anise
- Ground Pepper
- 1 cup fruit Juice (mandarin, orange, cranberry etc)
Instructions
- Cut the belly slices in half and put them in a freezer bag.
- Add the spices and shake well until the slices are well coated.
- Mix the soy sauce, lime juice, and mandarin in a bowl then pour over pork. Massage the marinade into the meat. Rest in the fridge until you’re ready to cook.
- Preheat the oven to 160°C.
- Place the pork belly slices in an ovenproof dish, then pour over the marinade. Add the star anise. Pour the fruit juice around them and place the star anise in the liquid
- Cover the dish with foil and bake 45 minutes.
- Turn the belly slices over and cook for another 45 minutes.
- Take off the foil. Turn the heat up to 200C, then bake for another 10-15 minutes until golden and sticky. Alternatively, grill them or barbecues them quickly.
- Serve warm or at room temperature.
