Background
Dal is one of the most popular dishes in Indian cuisine. There are many varieties of dal and many ways to cook them by adding vegetables. This particular dal recipe is one my daughter's favourite and even mine to too. It goes well with steamed rice and roti as well.
Ingredients
- 1 cup Yellow pigeon peas (Toor dal)
- ΒΌ th onion (cut length wise)
- 1 Tomato (chopped medium)
- 1 Green chilli
- 2 Tbsp Tamarind juice or altenatively , 1 Tbsp lime juice
- 1 tsp turmeric
- Salt as required
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- Β½ tsp Cumin seeds
- A pinch of asafoetida
- 2 dry red chillies
- A sprig of curry leaves
- A sprig of coriander leaves (Chopped)
- 2 cups of water
- 1 tsp Oil
Instructions
- Pressure cook dal with onion, green chilli, tomato and 2 cups water.
- When the dal is cooked, shift it to a deep bottomed pan and put on medium flame.
- Add turmeric and salt to the dal and let it boil for a couple of minutes (Add little water if required).
- Add the tamarind juice or alternatively add lime juice in the end. If using tamarind juice, let the dal boil until the tamarind juice is cooked for 5 min.
- In a separate pan, heat the oil. When the oil is hot, add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, dry red chillies and curry leaves. When they start spluttering add the seasoning to the dal.
- Switch off the stove. If using lime juice, add the lime juice now.
- Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
