Greek Style Burger
Background
I do find it incredible that people buy ready-made burger patties when it’s so easy to make your own - which are not full of unwanted additives! I tend to experiment with flavourings and spices - so far most of them have been delicious. The mince mixture for this recipe can be prepared in no time! Also, this Greek Style Burger can be served to most allergy-sufferers, as the feta sauce is separate; the patties have no eggs, gluten or nuts; and you can serve them in gluten-free buns or with just a Greek salad so that those on a no-carb diet can enjoy it too. For this reason this burger is ideal for parties and summer BBQs.
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp dried oregano
- ½ tsp chilli flakes (optional)
- 4 Tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley
- 2 Tbsp chopped mint leaves
- ½ onion, grated
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- Zest of 1 lemon
- 500g minced beef
- 1 Tbsp lemon juice
- Feta sauce:
- 100g Feta cheese
- 5 Tbsp Greek youghurt (approx.)
- zest and juice of ½ lemon
- 1 Tbsp chopped mint
- salt and pepper
- To serve:
- buns, lettuce, cucumber/red onion/tomato slices
Instructions
- Put the mince in a mixing bowl. Add all ingredients and combine. Season with salt and pepper, then mix well with your hands.
- Form 4 patties and set aside or chill until you're ready to cook them.
- Make the feta sauce: mix the feta with enough yogurt to get a textured sauce. Add the lemon zest & juice, mint, salt & pepper. Taste, and adjust to your liking (you can add a pinch of cayenne if you want it spicy). Set aside.
- Heat your BBQ, grill or griddle pan.
- Brush the patties with a little oil, then cook over medium heat for 3-5 minutes on each side, depending on how well cooked you like your burger.
- Cut the buns in half, then toast or grill them and set aside.
- When the patties are cooked to your liking, move them to a plate to rest for a couple of minutes.
- Meanwhile assemble the burgers: spoon some feta sauce on the bun halves, add a few lettuce and tomato/onion/cucumber slices, place the patties on top, then add the other half of the buns.
- Enjoy!
