Background
This recipe is from the state of Bengal. It is famous in Pakistan and Bangladesh too. My neighbour is a Bengali and I first tasted this dish when she made it. I really liked it. It turned out really good and everybody in my family loves it.
Ingredients
- 1 kg Chicken (Preferably with the bone)
- 2 Onions (Cut in circles)
- 1 cup Onion paste
- 1½ Tbsp Grated garlic
- 1 Tbsp Grated ginger
- 1 Green Chilli (Chopped)
- 2 Tbsp Oil
- 1 Tbsp Ghee (Clarified butter)
- 1 tsp Sugar
- Salt as required
- ½ cup Cashew and poppy seed paste (6-7 cashews & 1Tbsp poppy seeds with water)
- 1½ cup Plain yogurt
- Whole Garam Masala (Bay leaf (2), Red chillies (2), Cardamom (5), Cinammon sticks (2), Cloves (4) and peppercorns (5) )
- Water as required
Instructions
- Marinate chicken with oil, grated ginger, grated garlic, chopped green chilli, onion paste and salt for one hour in refrigerator.
- Heat ghee in a pan and add the whole garam masala.
- After a minute, add the marinated chicken. Cook the chicken for about 10 min.
- Beat together sugar, salt and yogurt, adding little water to it.
- Pour the beaten yogurt, onions and cashew and poppy paste into the chicken.
- Cook the chicken under lid until the gravy thickens and chicken is cooked fully.
